• Over $1 Million Paid By Phone And Web Providing Speedy Access To Justice

    LAS VEGAS – February flew by yet the short month didn’t stop motorists from speeding to pay their traffic tickets. The Las Vegas Township Justice Court collected more than $1 million in traffic fines in just 29 days with its online and phone payment system.   • A Las Vegas man accused by the Nevada Secretary of State of 32 felony counts, including fraud, theft and filing false documents made his first appearance before Justice of the Peace Tony Abbatangleo this morning (Jan. 4) in a Las Vegas courtroom.

    Matthew Marlon next appears on January 18 for a preliminary hearing in the Justice Court. The criminal complaint, filed by the Nevada Attorney General, accuses Marlon of stealing from homeowners struggling to make their mortgage payments. Marlon allegedly would enter into contracts with homeowners promising to pay their mortgages and then fail to do so in an illegal practice called equity skimming.

  • A preliminary hearing for defendants Jessie Daniels and Cheryl Luell has been rescheduled by Justice Court Judge Joe M. Bonaventure for 9 a.m. on January 14, 2008 in Justice Court Department 9.

    Daniels and Luell are charged with Conspiracy to Commit a Crime, Burglary, Grand Larceny, and Attempt Grand Larceny.

  • Public Defender Jeff Banks indicated the defense needs more time to prepare for a preliminary hearing in State v. Chester Stiles and the state concurred with the request. Judge Deborah Lippis rescheduled the preliminary hearing for 10 a.m. Dec. 12, 2007 in Courtroom 7A.

  • Judge Joe M. Bonaventure will continue preliminary hearing proceedings in State v. Simpson beginning at 8 am Tuesday (Nov. 13). No court is scheduled for Nov. 12 Veteran’s Day.

    Lewis and Clark Avenues remain closed to vehicular traffic between Third Street and Casino Center Avenue.

    Media seeking access to Courtroom 1A must line up beginning at 7 am.

  • Media seeking access to the media staging area or the courtroom should check in at the south entrance to the Regional Justice Center starting at 6 a.m. Thursday (Nov. 8). Media credentials are required to work in the media staging area located on Clark Avenue, and in the media parking area, located between Clark and Bonneville Avenues.

    One media seat per media outlet has been assigned as of today (Nov. 7). A number of seats remain, which will be released by raffle. These additional seat credentials will be released at approximately 8:30 a.m. in front of Courtroom 1A. All media without designated seats who wish to view the preliminary hearing are invited to do so in Courtroom 1B, which has been established as a media overflow work area.

    CourtTV is providing a switched gavel-to-gavel feed available in the media parking lot. Radio XLR hook-ups will be available in Courtroom 1A. In addition, a multbox will be available in Courtroom 1B. Media are further encouraged to limit computer laptop use to Courtroom 1B.

  • Media wishing to park satellite and live vans in the designated parking lot, must line up starting at 7 a.m., Wednesday (Nov. 7), on Casino Center between Clark and Bonneville Avenues. Media must provide the Court Information Office with parking needs by Tuesday at 5 p.m.

    A media staging area has been created on Clark Avenue. Currently media will be able to set up in this area Wednesday afternoon. Media setups will not be allowed on the sidewalk bordering Third Street. We will work to move up the setup time on Clark Avenue to earlier in the day Wednesday.

    Media representatives must obtain a pass to work in the media staging area and attend the preliminary hearing. Media without a pass will not obtain access to the stagng area or the courtroom. Media wishing to obrtain media passes for this preliminary hearing must check in at the South Information Booth of the Regional Justice Center between 1 and 5 p.m. Wednesday (Nov. 7).

    A meeting to discuss television and still media pooling needs will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Courtroom 1B.

  • Michael McClinton waived his right to a preliminary hearing this morning before Justice of the Peace Joe M. Bonaventure. McClinton will next appear Nov. 13 at 9 am in the District Court’s Arraignment Courtroom to enter a plea to individual counts of Conspiracy to Commit Robbery and Robbery.

    McClinton is the third co-defendant
    to agree to testify against Mr. Simpson and two other men in an alleged September hotel robbery at the Palace Station.

  • The Clark County District Attorney filed an amended complaint this morning charging O.J. Simpson and three co-defendants with two new charges bringing the total numer of counts to 12.

    In the new complaint, filed in the courtroom of Joe M. Bonaventure, a second felony coercion charge was made against Simpson and two new coercion with a deadly weapon charges were filed against Clarence Stewart, Michael McClinton and Charles Ehrlich.

    All four defendants are expected to appear in Justice Court for a preliminary hearing Nov. 8 and 9 on 11 felonies, which include kidnapping, armed robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, conspiracy and coercion, and one gross misdemeanor count of conspiracy to commit a crime.

  • Chester A. Stiles made his first appearance before Judge Deborah Lippis this morning in Justice Court Department 1. Stiles was surrounded by Court Marshals and corrections officers from the Clark County Detention Center. Security was expanded following numerous threats targeting Stiles.

    Stiles was appointed a public defender after he indicated to Judge Lippis that he couldn’t afford an attorney. Deputy Public Defender Jeff Banks was appointed to the case.

    Stiles returns to court Nov. 19 at 10 a.m. for a preliminary hearing. He is being held without bail in the Clark County Detention Center.

    Stiles faces the following counts and charges:

    • 10 counts of Lewdness with a child under 14 years old
    • 11 counts of Sexual Assault with a victim under 14 years old
    • 1 count of Attempted Sexual Assault with a victim under 14 years old
    • 1 count of Use of a Minor in Pornography
