State v. Rudin: Post Conviction Relief Granted

District Court Judge Sally Loehrer has granted a petition for post conviction relief for Margaret Rudin, convicted in 2001 of murdering her husband. Loehrer concluded after a lengthy hearing that Rudin is eligible for a new trial. The case returns for a status check at 8:30 a.m. on Dec. 29, 2009 for the setting of a new trial date.
Rudin was convicted by a Clark County Jury in May 2001 of the murder of 64-year-old Ron Rudin. The jury convicted Rudin of murder with use of a deadly weapon and she was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 20 years.
Price, et. al. v. Veronica Schmidt, Jury Verdict

A District Court civil jury found Veronica Schmidt negligent in the deaths of four individuals and awarded the victim’s families $1 million for grief or sorrow and loss of companionship Tuesday (Nov. 20) evening in Department 12. Schmidt was not present for the jury’s verdict.
The civil lawsuit was brought by survivors following a March 2005 crash that killed Raquel Jimenez, Angelica Jimenez, Samantha Allen, and Reginald Williams .
The jury found the City of Las Vegas was not negligent in the accident.
State v Lozano: Jury Deliberations

A jury will begin deliberating this morning seeking a verdict in State v. Lozano. The jury returns at 9:30 AM to District Court Dept. 21. Lozano has been on trial on various charges including Murder with Use of a Deadly Weapon in connection with the death of nine-year-old Genesis Gonzalez.
State v. Young: Deliberations

The jury in the penalty phase of the trial for Terrell Young worked into the evening and will return tomorrow morning for further deliberations. The jury must decide if Young should receive a penalty of Life With the Possibility of Parole or Life Without the Possibility of Parole as his sentence for the killings of 20-year-old Tracey Gorringe, 20-year-old Peter Talamantez, 19-year-old Matthew Mowen and 19-year-old Jeffrey Biddle.
Young continued to disrupt court and was accompanied by eight corrections officers during the trial as the court attempted to maintain order in the courtroom.
State v. Scholl: Penalty Phase

The penalty phase for James Scholl continues this morning (Feb. 17) at 10 a.m. in Dept. 9 (Courtroom 14A) of the Regional Justice Center. Testimony will continue in the case. Yesterday, David Chitprasart, the son of victim Pairoj Chitprasart, talked about his father’s character and related his emotions upon seeing his father’s burned body.
Scholl’s brother indicated their family had a good life in Chicago but Scholl had turned to drugs at an early age.
Testimony continues this morning and the jury is expected to begin deliberations today.

The jury in State v. Scholl received the case at approximately 2:30 p.m. and deliberated until 5 p.m. today. The jury returns tomorrow (Feb. 15) at 10 a.m.
