Text and Email System Provides Timely Court Updates
Posted by Michael in Administration, Education, Security on January 20th, 2010
The Clark County Courts will launch this week a new Community Information Service provided by Nixle, LLC designed to deliver important and timely information by web, e-mail and cell phone text (SMS).
The service will allow the Clark County Courts to send quick, efficient, and secure court information out to community members who subscribe to the system. Through www.nixle.com, the Clark County Courts will be able to send text message (SMS) and email alerts to subscribers in a specific area, down to .25 miles.
Notifications might be considered in the following instances:
- A public safety emergency requires people to stay in or remain away from the Regional Justice Center. A Nixle alert can let individuals near the courthouse know what’s happening, allowing individuals to take a proactive role in their own safety. Messages arrive by text message (SMS) or e-mail.
- A high profile event is taking place that may require individuals to avoid an area around the courthouse, or may impact on their daily routine. A Nixle alert would tell them the specifics of the event and allow them to proactively plan their day.
- A public event is planned for the courthouse and we wish to invite everyone to attend. A Nixle alert can provide them the details and encourage them to participate.
The service is provided at no cost to individuals who subscribe to the alerts. Sign up at www.nixle.com to register.

Juvenile Judge Seeks to Develop Solutions to Reduce Juvenile Delinquency

Minority Representation in the Juvenile Justice System Too High
LAS VEGAS – Clark County Family Court Judge William O. Voy will host a community forum titled “Preventing Juvenile Delinquency” at 1 p.m. Friday (Oct. 2) at the Pearson Community Center, 1625 W. Carey Avenue, North Las Vegas. The forum is sponsored by the Eighth Judicial District Court and the Clark County Department of Juvenile Justice Services.
“We have too many minority youth appearing in the Juvenile Court compared to the rest of the population,” said Juvenile Court Judge William O. Voy. “Though we have made great strides in reforming the juvenile justice system over the past six years, we have not achieved significant overall decline in the number of youth committing crimes, especially among minority youth.”
“Community intervention is needed to provide services for families and youth at risk. We want to provide a network of programs and services to parents to assist them in preventing their children from committing crimes so they never end up in the juvenile justice system,” said Voy.
The forum will bring community groups and agencies together to identify services and programs that can assist in preventing juvenile crimes in the community. The goal is to provide early-intervention services to families with at risk youth and work to prevent many juveniles from reaching the juvenile justice system.
Media are invited to attend. Contact Michael Sommermeyer, Court Information Officer, (702) 671-4534, for more information.

District Court Delivers Court To School in Partnership With Clark County School District
Posted by Michael in District Court, Education, News Release on December 3rd, 2007
LAS VEGAS – Students in the law magnet program at Canyon Springs High School will have a precedent setting opportunity to analyze a civil trial as the Eighth Judicial District Court brings its Short Trial Program to the school beginning at 8:30 a.m. December 7, 2007 in the Leadership and Law Preparatory Academy Courtroom of the high school at 350 East Alexander Road in North Las Vegas. The visit to Canyon Springs is a partnership between the Clark County Courts and the Clark County School District.
The Short Trial Program compresses trials into a one day process that aims to complete a jury trial quickly. The parties agree to spend no more than three hours per side to present their case to the jury. The jury is smaller, with three of four jurors required to reach a verdict.
“The Short Trial concept provides the perfect educational experience for students because it takes all the elements of a complex trial and distills it down into one day,†said Judge Timothy C. Williams, who will preside over Friday’s case. “The opportunity to show young people the legal process, and give them a first-hand experience, is a wonderful teaching tool for the District Court and the Clark County School District.â€Â
More than 600 students make up the Leadership and Law Preparatory Academy, which educates high school students on the basics of the American legal system and prepares them for leadership positions in their school and community. Students graduate with an Honors Diploma after taking classes focusing on economics, policy studies, political analysis and law.
“We are ecstatic that Judge Williams has offered our students this opportunity. It will be a great benefit to the law program and all of our students. We hope to continue this partnership in the future. I hope we can make it a permanent part of the curriculum because I know of no other high school in the country that can offer this type of educational experience to its students,†said Dr. Ronan Matthew, principal at Canyon Springs High School.
At the conclusion of the trial, students will be encouraged to visit with the attorneys, judge, marshal, court clerk, law clerk, court reporter to learn more about careers in the legal system. In addition, students will be able to question the jurors about their participation in the proceeding and why they reached a specific decision.
“By taking the Short Trial Program to Canyon Springs High School we essentially are bringing an existent court to the school and providing a learning experience,†said Alternative Dispute Resolution Commissioner Chris A. Beecroft Jr., who supervises the Short Trial Program. For instance, the court intends to further this partnership with the Clark County School District to include truancy and juvenile hearings. Other Short Trial cases are expected to return to Canyon Springs in the future.
