Price, et. al. v. Veronica Schmidt, Jury Verdict

A District Court civil jury found Veronica Schmidt negligent in the deaths of four individuals and awarded the victim’s families $1 million for grief or sorrow and loss of companionship Tuesday (Nov. 20) evening in Department 12. Schmidt was not present for the jury’s verdict.

The civil lawsuit was brought by survivors following a March 2005 crash that killed Raquel Jimenez, Angelica Jimenez, Samantha Allen, and Reginald Williams .

The jury found the City of Las Vegas was not negligent in the accident.

State v. Alcantar, et. al., New Plea Entered

Six defendants in State v. Alcantar entered guilty pleas today (Nov. 19) before District Court Judge Michelle Leavitt. The six individuals will be sentenced at 9:30 a.m. on January 3, 2008 in Department 12. ÂÂ

The six defendants are members of the Mongols motorcycle club who were charged with numerous counts stemming from an April 2002 gun battle at the Harrah’s Laughlin Resort. Previously, six members of the Hells Angels motorcycle club admitted guilt for their actions in the crime. Remaining defendant, Frederick Donahue, has not entered a plea and remains a fugitive.

State v. Daniels and Luell, Preliminary Hearing Rescheduled

A preliminary hearing for defendants Jessie Daniels and Cheryl Luell has been rescheduled by Justice Court Judge Joe M. Bonaventure for 9 a.m. on January 14, 2008 in Justice Court Department 9.

Daniels and Luell are charged with Conspiracy to Commit a Crime, Burglary, Grand Larceny, and Attempt Grand Larceny.

State v. Stiles, Preliminary Hearing Postponed

Public Defender Jeff Banks indicated the defense needs more time to prepare for a preliminary hearing in State v. Chester Stiles and the state concurred with the request. Judge Deborah Lippis rescheduled the preliminary hearing for 10 a.m. Dec. 12, 2007 in Courtroom 7A.

State v. Simpson, et. al., District Court Arraignment

Defendants Charles Erhlich, Clarence Stewart and O.J. Simpson will appear before District Court Judge Jackie Glass at 10 a.m. Nov. 28 to enter pleas after Justice Court Judge Joe M. Bonaventure concluded enough evidence exists to bind over the defendants to face 12 counts, including kidnapping and robbery.

Judge Bonaventure made his decision this afternoon (Nov. 14) following a four-day preliminary hearing, which contained the testimony of eight witnesses.

The 12 charges stem from an alledged robbery Sept. 13 of two sports memorabilia dealers at the Palace Station.

An arraignment has been scheduled at 10 a.m. Nov. 28 in Courtroom 1A.

State v. Simpson, et. al., District Court Judicial Assignment

The random assignment of a District Court judge to preside over State v. Simpson was initiated when Defendant Charles H. Cashmore agreed to be bound over to the District Court for sentencing.

Judge Jackie Glass will preside over all future events in this case in the Eighth Judicial District Court. A former journalist, Glass has worked as an attorney since 1984. Judge Glass was elected to the District Court bench in 2002 and has served Department 5 since January 2003.

If Judge Joe M. Bonaventure binds over the remaining defendants to the District Court for trial, Judge Glass has scheduled a felony arraignment at 10 a.m. on Nov. 28 in Courtroom 1A of the Regional Justice Center.

The Clark County Court’s records reflect funds on deposit that are ready to be escheated to the State of Nevada Treasurer. In an effort to make sure that funds are returned to the appropriate parties, a list has been compiled and available for review. Upon review, if you feel that you or your client are entitled to the balance, or portion thereof, please prepare the appropriate order and submit for the judge’s signature. Adoption Day 2007

WHAT:   Sixth Annual Adoption Day.

WHEN:   Wednesday (Nov. 14) from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m..

WHERE:   Family Court Atrium, Family Court and Services Center, 601 N. Pecos.

EVENT:   Clark County’s Family Court, Division of Family Services, CASA and The Adoption Exchange will observe the Sixth Annual Adoption Day starting with an opening reception at 8 a.m., Wednesday (Nov. 14), in the Family Court Atrium.ÂÂ

The event will recognize adoptive families who have adopted over the past year or who will finalize adoptions during special court hearings planned for Wednesday morning.ÂÂ

More than 25 adoptions, impacting the lives of more than 35 children, are expected to take place from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in various courtrooms. Families and judges will be available to interview regarding the adoption process.

State v. Simpson, et. al., Schedule Nov. 13

Judge Joe M. Bonaventure will continue preliminary hearing proceedings in State v. Simpson beginning at 8 am Tuesday (Nov. 13). No court is scheduled for Nov. 12 Veteran’s Day.

Lewis and Clark Avenues remain closed to vehicular traffic between Third Street and Casino Center Avenue.

Media seeking access to Courtroom 1A must line up beginning at 7 am.

State v. Simpson, et. al., Media Credentials Advisory

Media seeking access to the media staging area or the courtroom should check in at the south entrance to the Regional Justice Center starting at 6 a.m. Thursday (Nov. 8). Media credentials are required to work in the media staging area located on Clark Avenue, and in the media parking area, located between Clark and Bonneville Avenues.

One media seat per media outlet has been assigned as of today (Nov. 7). A number of seats remain, which will be released by raffle. These additional seat credentials will be released at approximately 8:30 a.m. in front of Courtroom 1A. All media without designated seats who wish to view the preliminary hearing are invited to do so in Courtroom 1B, which has been established as a media overflow work area.

CourtTV is providing a switched gavel-to-gavel feed available in the media parking lot. Radio XLR hook-ups will be available in Courtroom 1A. In addition, a multbox will be available in Courtroom 1B. Media are further encouraged to limit computer laptop use to Courtroom 1B.
