Students from nine law schools will compete this week in a regional trial advocacy competition at the Regional Justice Center (RJC). Hosted by the American Trial Lawyers Association (ATLA), the mock court competitions will take place Thursday through Saturday (March 2-4) in various courtrooms of the RJC. The winner of this regional competition will advance to the national final competition in Florida.
Each team will participate in three mock trials. The four teams with the most points will go on to the semi-final round, with the two best teams competing in the final round of the regional championship.
“This competition will provide the students with an opportunity to hone their presentation skills, test their ability to logically apply the law, and provide them with feedback on their talent for preparing and presenting a case in a state of the art courthouse,†said Nevada Supreme Court Justice Nancy A. Becker, who will preside over the final round.
Approximately 60 law students from the University of South Dakota, University of San Diego, University of California Hastings, UCLA, Louisiana State University (LSU), Loyola Marymount University, Southern University Law Center, University of Wisconsin, and University of Wyoming will participate in the regional competition.
More than 100 attorneys and judges will volunteer their time to judge the competition. Justice Becker will preside over the final trial.
